With devastating statistics about the opioid epidemic fulling news feeds, it can feel at times like tobacco isn't that big of a deal.
Vaping has been embraced by younger folks even as conventional rates of tobacco use go down. Vaping can be just as dangerous and addictive as smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco, particularly if the vape juice contains nicotine. Vapes can even have higher levels of nicotine than regular cigarettes or cigars.
A few facts about nicotine:
It is extremely poisonous.
Just 30 - 60 mg of nicotine ( a drop of pure nicotine in liquid form) is a lethal dose for an average adult.
A typical manufactured cigarette contains about 10 mg of nicotine, but most of it goes up in smoke, with approximately one milligram of nicotine being inhaled by the smoker.
Nicotine can be lethal to children in doses as small as 10 milligrams.
In the chart above, notice how high the numbers are for high school students who report using e-cigarettes/ vapes vs cigars or other forms of smoking.
Nicotine is toxic and addictive whether it comes from gum, patches, vape juice, or cigarettes. There is no "safe" way to use nicotine.
